Mexico beat the United States 2-0 on Sunday, August 9, in Mexico City to win the 2026 Concacaf Under-20 Championship. Concacaf counts it as Mexico’s second title in a row and a record 15th overall.
The tournament is Concacaf’s regional championship for national teams of players under 20, and it is held every two years. Mexico hosted this one, from July 24 to August 9.
The final was played at Estadio Azteca, which Concacaf lists under its sponsor’s name, Estadio Banorte. It is one stadium with two names.

The goals
Cristóbal Alfaro, a defender, headed in both Mexico goals, one in the 28th minute and one in the 69th. The first came off a set piece, one of the corners or free kicks where play stops and a team places the ball. Concacaf’s recap says the second followed a U.S. defensive mistake. Alfaro had also scored in Mexico’s semifinal win over Canada.
The red card
The United States was already a goal behind when it lost a player. Late in the first half, U.S. defender Chris Applewhite slid in on Mexico’s Hugo Camberos. The play then went to VAR, the video assistant referee, officials watching replays who can tell the referee on the field to look again. After the review, the referee showed Applewhite a red card. ESPN’s match report called the decision questionable and said the American appeared to make minimal contact. Applewhite had scored in the U.S. semifinal win over Costa Rica two days earlier.
The United States played the entire second half with 10 players, and Alfaro’s second goal came in that half.
Both teams had their World Cup places before kickoff
Both teams had already qualified for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are hosting, before they walked out on Sunday. Concacaf hands its World Cup places to the four teams that reach the semifinals, and both got there, Mexico past Canada 2-1 and the United States past Costa Rica 2-0. U.S. Soccer says its team also earned a place at the 2027 Pan American Games. The final decided a trophy, not a ticket. These are not the senior national teams of the Mexico-United States rivalry: the players who decided Sunday’s final are under-20 squad members, not senior internationals.
What Mexico takes from Sunday
For Mexico, Sunday was also a rematch of the 2024 final, which Mexico won as well.
The tournament doubled as this region’s qualifying competition for the men’s soccer tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The United States is already in that tournament as the host country, and Mexico claimed a place through this tournament.
