A shooting at an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon left three people dead and injured multiple police officers, the City of Minneapolis said in a statement. Two civilians and the suspected shooter died; officials say they still do not know how the shooter died, have not named him, and have not identified either civilian who was killed.
The shooting happened at 15 E. Grant St., an apartment building near the Loring Park neighborhood formerly known as Loring Towers and now called Shoreline Plaza, according to the city. Police said they responded to 911 calls of shots fired around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026. Officers arriving at the building found multiple victims in the lobby and heard more gunfire, which they traced to an upper floor. There, officers encountered a haze that limited their visibility.

What the city says happened
Of the three people who died, one civilian was shot and died at the scene, and a second civilian who was shot died later at Hennepin County Medical Center, according to the city’s Wednesday statement. The suspected shooter also died at the scene.
Three Minneapolis police officers were injured in the shooting, the city’s release says: two are being treated at Hennepin County Medical Center, and one of the three is undergoing surgery. Gov. Tim Walz said all of the injured officers are expected to make a full recovery.
Four officers experienced adverse effects after they were exposed to what the city called “an unknown airborne substance” on the upper floor — the haze officers ran into while pursuing gunfire. Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson said at a Wednesday evening press conference that it was “not immediately clear what the haze was.” Two officers were hurt when their squad car crashed while responding to the scene, per the city.
Three other civilians were shot and were being treated at Hennepin County Medical Center, the city’s statement said, as of Wednesday. Some outlets reported a higher number of wounded civilians; the figures here are the city’s.
The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) was present, and Chief Peterson thanked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for its investigative response.
For residents of the building, the city’s statement added that Central Lutheran Church, at 333 S. 12th St., is serving as a reunification site.
What is still unknown
Police have not identified either of the civilians who were killed. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner had not announced an official identification as of the city’s Wednesday statement.
Officials also say they have not determined how the suspected shooter died. “It is unknown how the suspected shooter died,” the city’s release states; the release also says Minneapolis police are not naming him at this point. Chief Peterson said police “were familiar with who this individual was” but did not release a name.
No motive for the shooting has been stated by police or prosecutors.
No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said her office is working with Minneapolis police and the BCA to gather information.
What happens next
The investigation is continuing, with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Minneapolis police all involved. No timeline has been given for when charging decisions or further updates might come.
