As of about 12:35 p.m. EDT Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, the season 21 premiere of TLC’s “Sister Wives,” the first season premiere since TLC’s trailer announced that Kody and Robyn Brown “will not be returning to the show,” has aired. It showed footage of Kody’s apologies from last season and the three women reacting to the exit, according to People, whose recap was posted that night.
People reports that new episodes air Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC; the premiere aired Sunday, Oct. 4. This recap relies on People’s account of the premiere and on Closer Weekly’s report on TLC’s earlier trailer.
What the TLC trailer said, per Closer Weekly
The exit was not first announced at the premiere. Closer Weekly reported that the season 21 teaser “dropped early Monday morning,” Sept. 14, nearly three weeks before the episode aired. Closer reports that TLC’s trailer said Kody and Robyn “will not be returning to the show.” The line states that the two will not return and gives no reason.
Closer calls it an “unexpected exit” and an “abrupt change.” People says Kody and Robyn “abruptly left the TLC show after 16 years of filming” and headlines the news a “Surprise Exit.”
In that trailer, as Closer reports it, Janelle said, “There has been a lot that has happened,” and added, “I was flabbergasted really when I got the news.” Meri, as Closer prints her words, said, “There have been a few changes,” and, “I was actually surprised when I was told that Kody and Robyn weren’t coming back to the show.” Christine Brown Woolley said, “I don’t know how to process it all. I’m just going to be honest.”
What the premiere showed
People says that in the premiere, Janelle, Christine and Meri “were filmed reacting to the news of Kody and Robyn’s exit from the show.”
“I don’t know how to process it all,” Christine said in a confessional. “I don’t know how to feel about this whole thing. It’s just bizarre they’re done. I don’t know what it means. I have no idea.”
According to People, Meri said in her own confessional that she was “surprised” when she heard Kody and Robyn were not coming back, and Janelle said she was also “very shocked.”
People also reports that the episode showed footage of what Kody called a “pilgrimage to apologize to my ex wives,” the sit-downs from the end of last season in which he apologized to Janelle, Christine and Meri separately. “I feel like the apology tour was, in the end, something he was trying to redeem himself with, and I don’t think it was necessarily that sincere because there’s been no contact since,” Janelle said in a confessional. “And he very publicly torpedoed my character afterwards, so I’m like, yeah, whatever.”
The family’s separations, in brief
The two outlets give the timeline separately. People says Christine ended her spiritual marriage to Kody in 2021, “after 25 years and six kids together,” that Janelle split from him “shortly after,” and that Meri was “the last of the three to call it quits.” Closer says Christine left in 2021, that Janelle announced her decision “one year later,” and that Meri confirmed her decision in 2023.
Both outlets say Kody legally married Robyn in 2014 after legally divorcing Meri. People adds that Robyn had three children from a previous marriage, whom Kody has since adopted, and that Kody and Robyn have children Solomon and Ariella.
The Coyote Pass property
People says the women also discussed the sale of the family’s Coyote Pass property. The accounts below are those People attributes to each person. They are not established facts.
People summarizes Kody’s earlier public comments as claiming that Janelle allegedly told him she knew he could sell the property out from under her, Christine and Meri, but that she knew he would pay her. People says a narrative about a “backdoor deal” followed and upset Meri.
“When we first bought Coyote Pass, I think most people in the family were so excited about it,” Meri explained in a confessional. “Once all the divorces happened over those couple of years, it was like, there’s really no point in keeping the property, let’s just be done with it and get rid of it.”
Janelle denied ever making a deal with Kody about the property. In a confessional, she said: “I’m meeting with Meri today because Kody openly accused me of trying to cut Meri out of the land deal, which is not true.” People says that when Janelle sat down with Meri, she relayed that Kody had said to her, “Well, maybe I’ll just sell and I’ll hold some money in reserve for Meri so when she does what I want her to do, I’ll give her the money.” That is Janelle’s account of Kody’s words, as relayed by People.
At the end of the conversation, People reports, Meri told Janelle that she appreciates her. The episode ended with Meri, Janelle and Christine setting aside their differences to meet and go through family photos together.
What we did not find
Neither report we read includes a new statement from Kody or Robyn Brown about the exit or about the premiere. People relays Kody’s earlier public comments about the property only as Janelle describes them.
Neither report gives a reason for the exit. TLC’s trailer line says Kody and Robyn “will not be returning to the show” and offers no explanation. We have not independently verified any account of the property dispute, and nothing here treats one side’s version as established.
