Fever dominate from the start
Indiana controlled the game from the start. The Fever led 64-46 at halftime and held the lead for nearly the entire night, building their advantage to as many as 21 points. They shot better than 50% from the field and made 16 of 25 three-pointers, a hot night from long range that put the outcome out of reach early.
Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 20 points in the first half and four 3-pointers. The performance extended her run of consecutive games scoring 20 or more points, a WNBA single-season record. Caitlin Clark added a double-double of 22 points and 10 assists, reported as her league-leading ninth game this season with at least 20 points and 10 assists. Aliyah Boston scored 19 points with 7 rebounds, and Sophie Cunningham came off the bench for 12 points on four 3-pointers. New York got 19 points apiece from Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, while Jonquel Jones added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana has now won seven of its last nine games.
Indiana’s Makayla Timpson, a forward drafted 19th overall out of Florida State in 2025, started for the Fever for the second straight game and drew the defensive assignment on Stewart.
White addresses the backlash before tip-off
Before tip-off, Fever coach Stephanie White skipped her usual pregame media session and instead read a roughly two-and-a-half-minute statement, then left without taking questions. “The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win,” she said. “Love will win. Grace will win. Humility will win.” Fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse booed White during pregame introductions. Clark defended her coach afterward: “That’s my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game.”
What led to the backlash
The statement followed several days of backlash over White’s measured response to an incident three days earlier. On August 8, Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington fouled Cunningham on a breakaway layup, making contact with her head and neck area; officials called a Flagrant 1 that was upgraded to a Flagrant 2 — the WNBA’s more severe flagrant-foul ruling — on review, and Carrington was ejected. After that game, White said she didn’t think Carrington had intentionally gone for Cunningham’s neck, while agreeing the officiating call itself was correct. Critics, including an Indiana state official who publicly called on the Fever to fire White, said she should have defended her own player more forcefully.
Carrington later posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on Threads, tagging the Fever. Two days afterward, she said the post was not an accusation that the foul call itself was about race, though what she meant by the post remains unclear. The WNBA had not announced any further discipline against Carrington beyond the ejection as of this week.
A separate, viral claim that the Fever had fired White, which began with an August 10 post from the @FeverUpdate account on X, was fact-checked as false by Lead Stories; White coached the August 11 game as scheduled.
The Liberty and Fever will meet for a fourth and final time this regular season on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
