Minnesota 20, Michigan 14: Three Michigan Turnovers, a Gophers Second-Half Shutout and the Little Brown Jug

Minnesota beat Michigan 20-14 on Saturday, Oct. 3, after trailing 14-7 at halftime. Michigan did not score after halftime; Minnesota scored 13 unanswered. As of about 6 a.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, AP’s game story and ESPN’s statistics report the result and the figures below.

What the numbers show

Michigan committed three turnovers to Minnesota’s two, according to ESPN’s team statistics: two Bryce Underwood interceptions and one lost fumble, a muffed punt return by Andrew Marsh. Minnesota’s two turnovers were both Drake Lindsey interceptions.

Minnesota outgained Michigan 262 yards to 180, held the ball for 37:36 to 22:24 and had 17 first downs to 11. Michigan was penalized six times for 43 yards; Minnesota once for 5. CBS Sports columnist Tom Fornelli, in an opinion column, gives Michigan’s season averages as 8.0 penalties and 72.25 penalty yards a game; those are his figures, and compared with those averages, six for 43 is lower.

ESPN shows Minnesota converting 4 of 14 third downs and 1 of 1 on fourth down, while Michigan was 3 of 10 and 0 of 1. The AP story says Marsh’s muffed punt return set up “the first of two short field goals” by Luke Drzewiecki.

How the second half turned

Lindsey threw two first-half interceptions. Smith Snowden’s pick in the first quarter gave Michigan the ball at the Minnesota 34 and set up a Jordan Marshall touchdown run. Nathaniel Staehling returned the second 79 yards for a touchdown, putting Michigan up 14-7 with 2:48 left before halftime.

Those were Michigan’s only scores. Fornelli wrote that Marshall “lost control of the ball after crossing the goal line”; Marshall’s touchdown run is in AP’s scoring summary.

Michigan did not score after halftime. Per AP’s scoring summary, Minnesota got Drzewiecki’s 31-yard field goal in the third quarter, then his 26-yard field goal and Lindsey’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Darius Taylor in the fourth.

FOX Sports reports the Gophers intercepted Underwood twice. ESPN says he was sacked three times and has been sacked at least once in 15 consecutive games, the longest active streak in FBS, per ESPN Research. AP credits Aydan West and Zack Harden with the interceptions.

Fleck said on FOX: “They swarmed to the ball. They played complementary defense. They played structured downs. They shrunk the pocket.”

Why it matters

Minnesota’s pregame preview listed Michigan ahead 73-23-3 in the Little Brown Jug series. FOX and the preview put it as Minnesota’s first home win over Michigan since 1977. AP puts it as the Gophers’ first win in the series since 2014 and the first time they hoisted the Jug at home “in 49 years.” Michigan’s official box score lists the attendance as 51,012.

Minnesota is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan is 3-2 and 0-2.

ESPN quotes Fleck: “Other than my marriage and my kids being born, this might be the best day of my life.”

Asked whether he knows what his team is, Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham said, per ESPN: “I’m still trying to figure that out … I’ve been in this profession 40-some years, and this is the biggest challenge I’ve had.” He said he would sit down with the offense and offensive coordinator Jason Beck during the bye week: “We may have to make some tough decisions. The results are unacceptable right now.”

What is next

Minnesota plays at Purdue on Oct. 10. Michigan has a week off, then hosts Penn State on Oct. 17, AP reports.

What we did not find

We did not find an updated Jug series count after the game; the sources we checked disagree on the all-time totals, so we are not printing one. We have not yet seen the AP poll released after the games.
