Dale Smith Jr. Held Without Bond in Michelle Parker Case After Second-Degree Murder Arrest

Update, Oct. 16, 2026: At his first court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 15, Dale Smith Jr. was ordered held without bond. Spectrum News 13 reported that prosecutors argued the evidence and the seriousness of the charge justified holding him without bond and that the judge agreed, and that his attorney, Rajan Joshi, said Smith maintains his innocence; the two sides agreed to set a later hearing on whether a judge will consider bond. Fox 35 reported that Smith pleaded not guilty through his attorney, according to court records, and that the judge ordered him held pending a potential request for an Arthur hearing, a Florida bond hearing. The Associated Press reported that a detention hearing was not immediately scheduled, and no source gives a date for it. Fox 35 also reported that a judge sealed the arrest affidavit and warrant on Oct. 14 at a detective’s request without citing a reason, while Spectrum quoted Joshi as saying he had read the 46-page affidavit; the reports do not say how both can be so, and none describes what the affidavit says. Smith remains presumed innocent. The article below was written on Oct. 15, before the hearing.

Orlando police on Wednesday arrested Dale Smith Jr., the former fiancé of Michelle Parker, who disappeared on Nov. 17, 2011, on a charge of second-degree murder. Parker has not been found. Police say a renewed review of the case, including re-examined statements and digital forensics, led to the arrest; they have not described the specific evidence. Dale Smith Jr. is presumed innocent. CBS News and NBC News reported that he has denied involvement in the past.

What police announced

Orlando police said Dale Smith Jr., 55, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, at his business, according to WKMG and NBC News (FOX 35 says early Wednesday), on a single count of second-degree murder. He was booked into the Orange County jail. NBC News reported it was not immediately clear whether he had retained an attorney at that point; he has since appeared in court through attorney Rajan Joshi.

Parker was 33 when she disappeared, nearly 15 years ago. In a separate statement, police said that although Parker has not been located, “all evidence leads to Dale Smith Jr. as the person responsible for Michelle’s murder,” CBS News and NBC News reported.

What evidence police described

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said at a news conference: “Over the past year, we expanded our investigative team looking into this case and took a fresh, focused look at all of the evidence. We reexamined testimony and conflicting statements made by the suspect, and used advanced and digital forensics to uncover and analyze additional evidence,” as quoted by WKMG ClickOrlando.

Det. Phillip McMican said Dale Smith Jr. had been interviewed multiple times and had taken part in several depositions. “Very specific questions were asked of him numerous times over the years, where he gave different answers to those same questions,” McMican said, according to CBS News.

CBS News reported that McMican said advances in forensic technology let investigators “better interpret” evidence from vehicles, electronic devices, phones and computers than was possible 15 years ago, and that “new evidence has been found in the last year.” WKMG reported that the newer technology included digital forensics that revealed more detailed location data and communications between devices.

CBS News reported that the exact details of what specifically prompted the arrest were not provided, and NBC News reported that the chief declined to release details to “protect the integrity of this case.”

What the State Attorney said

State Attorney Monique Worrell said prosecutors are starting with second-degree murder, but the charge could escalate as the evidence allows, WKMG reported. NBC News reported she said it could be upgraded to first-degree murder if evidence supports it. Worrell said her office worked with Orlando police before the arrest and did not explain what that collaboration looked like.

The 2011 timeline as reported

WKMG published a timeline “according to information collected by News 6 from investigators and court records.”

On Nov. 17, 2011, a previously recorded episode of “The People’s Court” aired, featuring Parker and Dale Smith Jr. in a dispute over a $5,000 engagement ring. At 3:18 p.m., a security camera captured Parker entering Smith Jr.’s apartment community to drop off their 3-year-old twins, WKMG’s timeline said, describing that as apparently the last time she was seen or heard from alive. WKMG’s arrest story said she was last seen at the Carter Glen Condominiums in the Lee Vista area. The outlets do not say whether those are the same place.

At 4:26 p.m., Parker’s brother texted to ask where she was, and she replied “Waterford.” Cell towers placed her near Hoffner Avenue, close to Smith Jr.’s apartment, according to the timeline.

Around 8 p.m., her phone stopped transmitting to a tower near the Belle Isle area. Dive teams later recovered the iPhone under a bridge over Lake Conway. Around 8:55 p.m., her SUV was recorded on camera at Orlando-Vineland Road and Conroy Road, stripped of identifying stickers. The SUV was found abandoned the next day near an apartment complex.

According to WKMG, police had identified Dale Smith Jr. as the suspect by Dec. 8, 2011. NBC News reported he was considered a prime suspect at the time but was not charged until now.

What the family said

Parker’s mother, Yvonne Stewart, told CBS News: “Michelle definitely didn’t deserve to have her life ended.” Dale Smith Jr. has not been tried, and no court has found anything.

CBS News also quoted her brother, Dustin Erickson: “I’ve been carrying a lot of bad thoughts for 15 years that weren’t happy. They got lifted a little bit today.”

The years since

According to WKMG’s timeline, Parker’s family brought a wrongful-death suit against Smith Jr. in March 2013 (the timeline lists March 7, 2013), alleging he “was negligent or otherwise committed a wrongful act.” His attorney at the time, Mark NeJame, argued that nothing linked Smith Jr. to Parker’s disappearance or death. The timeline says the suit was voluntarily dismissed on March 11, 2020, according to court records, and does not say why.

On Aug. 16, 2023, Orlando police searched a backyard near Texas Avenue as part of the search for Parker, according to WKMG’s timeline; FOX 35 reported that investigators found no remains.

What is not known

As of the Oct. 15 first appearance, no date for the bond-related hearing has been reported, and the reports gathered here do not describe the contents of the arrest affidavit. Parker has not been found. Whether prosecutors will change the charge is also unknown; the State Attorney said it could be upgraded if evidence supports it. Until a court rules, Dale Smith Jr. remains presumed innocent.
